About

The studio aims to leverage the expressive qualities of light and material, with a refined organizational strategy developed around the process of living in space.

The goal of the studio is to capture a certain improvisational quality which relates to natural forms- geological and biological processes of flow, sensitive dependence on initial conditions.  The objective is to conceptualize and create spaces which feel a natural extension of the human experience and make a connection to the environment and context which surrounds us.

Nicklaus Schwaller , Architect, AIA

Nicklaus Schwaller is an architect and artist based in Santa Barbara.

In each project we seek to establish a sculptural dialogue with the landscape, ground, and sky, to optimize and elevate the living experience. The design approach of the studio is based on a fluid formal vocabulary that emphasizes processes of flow and spontaneous intersection.
We identify opportunities in the project to create unique and well-considered environments.
We develop drawings and models to create, envision, and evolve the design.
We provide design leadership and detailed construction drawings to achieve a high-level result.

Nicklaus Schwaller is a Licensed Architect in California, with over 10 years experience on notable built work in the area.   He studied architecture at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, with additional study in Ticino, Switzerland, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara.

Schwaller's work encompasses not only architecture but also the development of a free design sensibility that can jump scales, bridging from the technical into the poetic realms of painting, sculpture, and music.
